The different types of finch feeders
- Sock Feeder- A sock feeder is a type of feeder that is made from nylon mesh that is usually filled with nyjer seed commonly called thistle. The sock is then hung from a tree or other fixture, and the birds can perch on the sock to eat. This type of feeder is best for small birds, such as finches, since they can dine from any direction by hanging directly on the bag. A sock feeder can be used to feed a variety of tiny birds at once. Sock feeders are not constructed of actual socks but it’s shape resembles a sock.
- Tube Feeder– A tube feeder is a type of feeder that consists of a long clear tube with metal feeding ports and perches to deliver food such as nyjer, safflower, or sunflower seed. Tube feeders usually have metal bases and capes to keep food dry and clean.
- Mesh Feeder– Mesh feeders are usually made of wire mesh or a black screen with multiple small holes to allow birds to cling to and access the seed inside. They are best for holding a variety of different types of seeds, such as sunflower seeds, nyjer, and peanuts. You may use your favorite seed, depending on the size of the holes. They’re also great for keeping bird seed dry and clean, as well as squirrel-proof.
- Up-Side Down Feeder– An up-side-down feeder is a type of bird feeder that has feeding ports below the perches. So birds such as finches must perch upside down to eat (which they love to do). This can be a fun and challenging feeder for your backyard birds and is best for all kinds of small birds who enjoy hanging upside down. This feeder will also keep your starlings and grackles in check since it is hard for them to eat upside down.

1. Perky-Pet 481F Finch Feeder With Flexports
The Perky-Pet 481F Finch Feeder with flex ports is a top pick for best bird feeders for finches. This feeder is made of durable plastic and has a transparent tube that allows you to see when it needs to be refilled. The flexible ports allow for finches to easily grab nyjer seed.
Why we love this finch feeder-
This is one of our top picks for the top 10 best finch feeders for one because the reviews are fantastic, and it is super budget-friendly. Another feature that we appreciated about this feeder is that it has double feeding stations. Finches can eat sitting upright or upside down, depending on their preference.
Finch ports are usually tiny, which can make it difficult for birds to get seed from. The Perky-Pet Feeder offers flex ports that are flexible and gives more feeding options than traditional finch ports.
The design allows birds to eat at a good vantage point outside of the port, resulting in a better natural feeding posture and improved visibility, which encourages them to stay. By using the flex ports you don’t have to worry about the food ports clogging with seeds. The flex ports shield your bird seed from rain, snow, and other elements.
Summary of Features
- More feeding angles than typical finch ports
- Dual perch locations, also allow for right-side-up feeding and upside-down feeding.
- The flex port system has six-port stations that prevent seeds from clogging
- A clear tube that allows easy monitoring of seed levels
- Can hold 1.5 pounds of Nyjer/Thistle seed
- Rubber flex ports protect seed from weather elements
- Bright yellow color to easily attract finches
What we didn’t love about this feeder-
The only downside to this feeder that we didn’t like is that it does not have a built-in tray for catching husks or fallen seeds, so you will need to clean underneath it frequently. Also, since it is inexpensive and the tube is made of plastic, it may not withstand as much as other feeders.
2. Stokes Select Thistle Tube Bird Feeder with Six Feeding Ports
The Stokes Select Thistle Tube Bird Feeder with six feeding ports is a great pick for the best bird feeders for finches. It has a durable rust-proof polycarbonate material construction that is designed to last and comes in a bright yellow color. This feeder can hold up to 1.6 pounds of seed.
Why we love this finch feeder-
What made us love this feeder is the bright yellow color that is sure to catch any finches’ eye. We love the design and it is simple to clean and fill. The top roof has portals that resist rain to keep your finch seed dry and it is made from a polycarbonate material that lasts.
We also really love that every portion of the proceeds Stokes receives is donated to bird habitats and conservations. Also, it is very budget-friendly for anyone who is looking for a quality bird feeder without breaking the bank.
Summary of Features:
- Made from durable polycarbonate material and rust-resistant
- Holds up to 1.6 lbs of bird seed
- Has six feeding ports and comes in a bright yellow color
- The top roof protects against rain to keep seed dry
- Easy to clean and fill
- A portion of proceeds is donated to bird habitats and conservations
What we didn’t love about this feeder–
Because the feeder is not constructed of metal or a more durable material, a squirrel or other animal can still damage it. Any type of bird feeder, whether it is made of wire or plastic, can sustain moisture over time. As a result, be sure to change the feeder frequently and ensure that it is in an appropriate location to keep it dry.
Another thing we didn’t love about this feeder is that there is nothing to catch the fallen seeds or husks, so you will have to clean underneath the feeder more frequently.
3. Perky-Pet 399 Patented Upside Down Thistle Feeder
The Perky-Pet Upside-Down Thistle Feeder is designed to feed the finches in your yard with its unique upside-down perch mechanism. The 2 lb seed capacity ensures that your finches will have enough to eat without having to refill so often.
Why we love this finch feeder-
This finch feeder is one of our favorites since it is not only entertaining for bird watchers but the finches love the unique upside-down patent. Finches can easily consume while perched upside down.
The perches are positioned above, rather than below, each feeding station in this long, tube-shaped feeder to accommodate the birds’ unique capacity to feed while perched upside down. Finches can enjoy their food without being disturbed by other species since they have their own feeding station and other bully birds won’t bother them.
The feeder is constructed of long-lasting plastic, so it will stand up to the elements. Use the handy built-in hanging hook to hang it anywhere in your yard quickly.
Summary of features-
- The feeder is designed to specifically feed finches
- The perches are positioned above, rather than below, each feeding station which allows the birds to easily consume while perched upside down
- It is made of long-lasting plastic and has a 2 lb seed capacity
- The hanging hook makes it easy to hang anywhere in your yard
- It’s budget-friendly and a bright yellow

- Keeps bully birds and other species from bothering finches while they feast
- Entertaining to watch and finches will love it
What we didn’t love about this feeder-
There’s not much we can say we don’t love about this feeder. However this feeder is great for finches, but it’s not ideal if you’re trying to attract a variety of birds since it doesn’t have perches below or bigger feeding ports.
Another feature we wish this feeder had was a catching tray to catch fallen husks and seeds.
4. Kaytee Finch Feeder Yellow, 4 Socks–Finch Station 2
If you’re looking for an efficient and fun way to feed your backyard finches, the Kaytee Finch Feeder Yellow Socks are a great option. Why we love this Finch Feeder-
We love how easy it is to use and refill this finch feeder. The built-in extra seed holder on top is a great way to store seed with a gravity system that refills the sock as birds empty it.
The length and shape of these sock feeders allow for more finches to sit comfortably at the feeder, as the system consists of 2 hanging socks. It also comes with 2 replaceable socks and is super easy to refill and clean. Comes with a hanger already attached which makes hanging it easy right out of the box.
Finally, the weatherproof dome reservoir protects seed from rain and snow.
Summary of features-
- Includes a double dome feeding station with 2 replacement mesh socks
- Dome reservoir on top that is weatherproof
- Budget-friendly and bright yellow to attract finches
- Can accommodate more birds at the same time than a traditional sock feeder
- The larger capacity and extra seed storage in the dome design allow feeders to be filled less frequently.
- The two mesh socks hold 7 lbs of seeds
- Made in the USA
- Easy to use, clean, and refill
What we didn’t love about the feeder-
Sock feeders are not as sturdy as tube feeders, so you’ll need to replace sock feeders more frequently. There is also no tray to catch the husks that fall away from your feeder, so you will have to clean beneath it on a regular basis.
5. Perky-Pet YSSF00347 Shorty Finch Bird Feeder, Yellow
With the Perky-Pet Shorty Finch Feeder, you can bring the beauty of finches to your yard without spending a lot of money. The bright yellow color will attract finches to your yard, and the built-in perch makes it easy for them to feed. The 0.7-pound capacity feeder is both durable and useful, thanks to its all-metal construction and wire mesh surface.
Why we love this finch feeder-
We really love the all-metal design which is great for durability.
It’s all metal and has no wood or plastic! The wire mesh design is powder-coated for rust resistance, while the sturdy metal construction will help protect your feeder from squirrels. This feeder will last for years to come because of its distinctive metal design.
The circular perch and diamond-shaped mesh surface give this an all-over dining area for multiple finches. The 360-degree seed tray encourages perching, while the mesh provides a safe landing place for clinging birds.
This finch feeder is low-maintenance and has a simple design making it easy to clean. It features a removable lid and base to make cleaning a breeze. It also has a wide opening on top to allow for mess-free filling.
The built-in drainage holes prevent water from pooling in the reservoir. Furthermore, the mesh design allows for ventilation, allowing the moist seeds to breathe and stay fresh for longer. The large overhang protects the seeds and birds from rain. Also, the bottom perching tray is great for helping to catch fallen seeds and husks.
Summary of features-
- All-metal design
- Rust and weather resistance
- Durable enough to live up to squirrels
- Features a 360-degree seed tray/perch and diamond-shaped mesh for all-over dining
- Low-maintenance with a simple design for easy cleaning and refilling
- Wide opening on top for mess-free filling
- Built-in drainage holes
- Allows for ventilation
- Budget-friendly
What we didn’t love about this feeder-
The only thing we didn’t really love about this finch feeder is that it does not hold a lot of seed at once. You will possibly have to refill the feeder more often but that is not always since your backyard finches will always have access to fresh seed.
Also, some seeds appear to fall through the diamond-shaped mesh and accumulate on the bottom perching tray.
6. More Birds Songbird Vintage Bird Feeder, Sunflower and Thistle Feeder
The More Birds More Birds Songbird Vintage Feeder features a unique stay full port design that allows birdseed to continue to flow to your backyard finches. Also, you aren’t restricted to using just one kind of seed; the removable thistle ring instantly transforms the four-seed spout ports from mixed seed to thistle, allowing you to offer any seed you choose.
Why we love this finch feeder-
We love this finch feeder so much since you may transform your feeder ports from thistle seed to mixed seed if you want to feed other birds rather than just finches. This makes it inexpensive and convenient for birders who may want to feed different birds at different times.
The top lid screws off for easy filling and cleaning, with built-in drainage holes on the metal seed tray to prevent rain from building up. With the ability to hold up to 1.5 lbs of seed you won’t have to refill your bird feeder as much as the seed will continue to flow to your finches.
This vintage-inspired glass bottle feeder and bronze metal accents make for a beautiful feeder to add to your porch, garden, or yard.

- Unique gravity design keeps seeds flowing to birds as they empty it
- The thistle ring transforms a sunflower/mix seed songbird feeder into a thistle finch feeder.
- Drainage holes in the metal seed tray prevent water from pooling.
- Accent materials include antique bronze and Americana-inspired glass bottle.
- The top cap unscrews for easy filling and cleaning.
- Holds up to 1.5 lbs of seed of your choosing
- The feeder is made of glass and metal, so it’s very durable.
What we didn’t love about this feeder-
When it rains or snows, the seed in the bottom tray is prone to getting wet unless it is placed under cover to keep it dry. You would need to place this feeder undercover to help keep the seed fresh from water.
To include glass is prone to breaking so there is a chance that wind or other elements can damage your feeder and it shatter.
7. Kingsyard Bird Feeder House for Outside, Metal Mesh Wild Bird Feeder with Triple Feeders
The Kingsyard Bird Feeder House is a metal wild bird feeder with three separate feeding stations to attract a variety of birds. This sturdy design comes with 3 different feeding compartments that can be filled with different types of seeds. This feeder can hold up to 1.2 pounds of mixed seed, 0.7 pounds of sunflower seeds, and 0.7 ounces of nyjer seed at one time.
Why we love this finch feeder-
This finch feeder is one of our favorites due to the beautiful house design that gives you the ability to not only feed finches but also a variety of birds at once. We also love how much seed this feeder can hold which means you don’t have to refill it as often as other bird feeders.
The feeder is made of a rust-free metal frame that is designed to last, with two mesh sides for feeding and one open feeder in the center. The roof may be removed for easy cleaning and refilling, and there are drainage holes in the bottom tray to keep seeds dry.

- Attract a variety of species of birds, not just finches.
- Refund or replacement if you are not happy with your purchase.
- Budget-Friendly
What we didn’t love about this feeder-
The tray, however, has drain holes in it, which are supposed to allow water to drain out. But there isn’t any beneath the seeds, which might cause problems with bacteria and mold. Instead of hanging this feeder in an open space, consider putting it under a shaded area or drilling a few tiny drainage holes in the middle of the feeder.
8. Songbird Essentials Giant Finch Feeder, Finches Favorite 3 Tube Feeder with Perches for up to 24 Goldfinches, Yellow
The Songbird Essentials Giant Finch Feeder is a three-tube feeder that is designed to hold up to 24 finches. The feeder has perches on all sides, making it easy for multiple birds to eat at one time. - Holds up to 3 pounds of seed.
- 24 Finches Can feed at once
- Easy to refill and clean
What we didn’t love about this feeder-
The tubes are made of plastic and may not hold up to squirrels and other animals that may try and get the seed. Due to the fact that it contains a lot of seed, you have a greater chance of wasting seed and having to discard seeds if they get wet or go uneaten.
It also happens to be on the expensive side. It retails for around $50, which may not be affordable to most. Despite its heavy-duty construction and the ability to feed up to 24 finches at once, it isn’t the cheapest.
9. Droll Yankees New Generation Finch Flocker Birdfeeder, 36 Inches, 20 Ports, Yellow
The Droll Yankees New Generation Finch Flocker Birdfeeder is a 20-port feeder that is designed to hold up to 3.5 lbs of seed. The feeder is 36 inches long and has a metal hanger, making it easy to hang from a tree or pole.
Why we love this finch feeder-
The internal baffle directs the seed to the lowest level to ensure the feeder empties completely. This prevents waste and keeps your bird feeder clean and fresh.
It is made of high-quality materials with a UV-stabilized polycarbonate tube that won’t discolor over time. The drainage holes on the bottom keep seed dry and fresh by draining water and providing ventilation. This prevents bacteria and mold from growing, which in return makes your seed last longer.

- Holds up to 3.5 pounds of birdseed and has 20 feeding ports
- Includes an internal baffle that ensures the feeder empties completely without seed buildup
- Easy refilling and cleaning due to the cap that can slide up the hanger

- Included stainless steel wire or pole mount
What we didn’t love about this feeder-
What we didn’t love about this feeder is that it is on the more expensive side ranging from $45-$65. It holds a ton of seed which is a possibility of wasting seed and the seed going bad if it gets wet or dries out.
We also didn’t love that it is not as durable as other feeders making it a possibility that it may not stand up to other animals or weather elements.
10. Squirrel Buster Finch Squirrel-proof Bird Feeder w/4 Metal Perches & 8 Feeding Ports
The Squirrel Buster Finch is a squirrel-proof finch feeder that has a weight-activated perch that closes the access to the seed when a squirrel or other animal tries to land on it. When a squirrel climbs onto the feeder, its weight pushes down on the shroud, preventing access to the ports. These animals cannot access the seed inside and are not injured in any way.
Why we love this finch feeder-
What we really loved about this finch feeder is that it is easily converted into a clinging feeder by removing the perches. This helps deter large bully burds from using the feeder or even trying to access any seed.
Perching birds may perch on the seed ports while clinging birds can cling to the wire shroud. This adds to your bird population you bring to your feeder. The Squirrel Buster Finch has 8 seed ports: 4 with perches and 4 without.
Its second advantage is that it uses a negative grip tube to keep squirrels from grasping the hangers with their legs or hanging upside-down along the feeder, which could defeat the closing mechanism.
Summary of features-
- Truly squirrel proof with the closing mechanism
- Pays for itself by saving seed
- Has a negative grip tube
- Seed level indicator
- Lifetime help if you have any problems with your bird feeder and it’s under warranty
- For perching or clinging birds
- Chew Proof
- Has a detachable component system
- The tube allows for seed to have ventilation
- All pieces are UV resistant.
- Easy to refill and clean
- Durable and made to last for years to come
- Holds 2.4 pounds of nyjer Seed
What we didn’t love about this feeder-
Only one type of seed can be used in this feeder, which is nyjer seed, so don’t expect to be able to use a variety of seed mixes in this finch feeder.
This isn’t an issue unless you’re waiting to alter the seed from time to time in order to attract a variety of birds. This bird feeder, on the other hand, is perfect for attracting finches and other tiny birds.
Another thing we didn’t care for was how expensive this bird feeder is. Although it is both squirrel-proof and sturdy, it isn’t necessarily cheap.
How to choose the right finch feeder?
When searching for the best bird feeder for finches, there are a few things you should consider:
- The size of the feeder: You’ll want to find a feeder that is large enough to accommodate the number of finches you’re hoping to attract.
- The type of feeder: There are a variety of different types of feeders available on the market, so you’ll want to find one that best suits your needs.
- The price and durability: While you don’t want to spend too much money on a feeder, you also don’t want to skimp and end up with a cheap, flimsy feeder that won’t stand up to the elements.
- The color and design: While not as important as some of the other factors, you’ll want to find a feeder that is pleasing to the eye and complements your yard along with a bright yellow if possible to attract finches.
- Ease of cleaning and refilling: You’ll want to find a feeder that is easy to clean and refill, as you don’t want to spend all of your time maintaining the feeder and finches won’t visit a dirty or empty feeder.
Once you’ve considered these factors, you should be able to narrow down your choices and find the best bird feeder for your needs.
Why do you need a finch feeder?
Finches are beautiful little birds that can be a delight to watch and observe in your backyard. While they will visit a variety of feeders, if you’re looking to specifically attract finches, you’ll want to invest in a good finch feeder.
Finch feeders are designed specifically to accommodate the needs of finches, and they can be a great way to attract these lovely little birds to your yard. Finches are small in size and prefer a smaller seed that finch feeders are designed to accommodate.
In addition, finch feeders often have a variety of perches and seed ports to give finches plenty of options when it comes to feeding.
Where to place finch feeders?
When placing a finch feeder in your backyard, you’ll want to make sure to choose a spot that is easily accessible to the birds. The best place to hang a feeder is near a tree or large shrubs where they can easily escape if a predator approaches.
To make sure finches don’t feel vulnerable to predators while they are visiting your feeders be sure to place feeders about 10 feet away from places they can fly to for shelter and protection. It’s usually best to place bird feeders higher than your head.
A good rule of thumb is to use the 5-7-9 rule to keep squirrels away from your finch feeders. Place them 5 feet off the ground, 7 feet from other objects, and 9 feet under a clearance to deter squirrels 90 percent of the time. Add 6 inches and you will deter 100 percent of squirrels from your feeders.
Maintaining a Finch Feeder
Cleaning and maintaining finch feeders is a relatively easy task, but it’s important to do it regularly in order to keep the feeder clean from bacteria and the birds healthy. Most finch feeders are designed to be easy to clean, that can be washed with a bleach and water solution.
It’s important to clean your finch feeders on a regular basis to prevent the spread of disease. You should clean your feeders at least once every two weeks, and more often if you notice mold or bad weather spoils your bird food.
In addition, to make sure you have finches visiting your feeder you want to make sure it is always filled with fresh seed. Finches are very picky about their seed and won’t visit a dirty feeder or one that contains old seed.
When refilling your feeder always empty the old seed before adding fresh. During the warmer months, it’s best to change food every 5 to 7 days, or when the climate is cooler maybe every 2 weeks. If you notice finches are leaving without eating then your seed is probably molded or dried out.
Nyjer seed should NOT be purchased in bulk since it will almost always dry up before you can use it. Purchase your supply on a monthly basis or as you need it.
